It is very common to come across lifts in India, whether it is a residential building or a commercial establishment. Lift and elevator are terms used interchangeably to refer to the same mobility solution that has been around for so long that it has now become a part of everyday life.

Regardless of whether it is in a residential or commercial establishment, there are certain etiquettes that must always be followed by those who plan to use lifts and elevators. Some of the most common etiquettes are:
Considering Taking the Stairs
Use the elevator only if you must. For example, in a busy high rise, if you only need to go up or down a couple of floors, you need to really think about whether it’s worth adding the extra 20 seconds to the trip for the other people in the car. This does not apply to senior citizens, people with strollers or toddlers, those with mobility issues, etc.
Space is Important
Following this nicety might get more and more difficult to observe with more people entering the elevator, but always try and maintain some space from the other passengers in the car. Space yourself evenly from other passengers, face the exit, and keep your arms and hands by your side to avoid accidentally brushing against someone.
Avoid Awkward Eye Contact
A little eye contact as one is getting on an elevator is at times unavoidable. You may even follow it through with a smile and nod if it seems it will be well received. But soon afterward, make sure to look away and focus on anything else in the elevator to keep this encounter from becoming a weird and awkward situation.
Ingress and Egress
If you are waiting for an elevator, stand to one side, so as to not crowd the doors and always wait for the deboarding passengers to make their exit first before you get on. When getting off an elevator, especially if the elevator is rather full, two people closest to the door should step out, even if it is not their stop, so people from the back can exit the car. Once people have exited, you can once again enter the lift and be on your way.
